The Black-footed Penguin (African penguins) are an endangered species that can only be found on the southern tip of Africa or on the islands that are near the shore.

African penguins are a semi aquatic species. This means that they can swim in the water for long periods of time and also live on the land.  Because of this they have adapted webbed feet and waterproof feathers

The African penguin is considered a communal species- meaning that they’re a social animal that lives in large groups. They rely on their community to escape predators while hunting.

The penguins have black backs and white tummies for camouflage. This type of camouflage is also called countershading. If you were to be under a penguin in the water looking up, the sun would shine down and make the white belly blend into the sunlight. If you were to be above a penguin in the ocean, their black back would blend into the dark water.
